How to Travel with Dogs and Cats to Hawaii on Alaska Flights?

Passengers who are traveling with animals and booked an Alaska ticket to Hawaii are allowed to take dogs and cats only. Hawaii is the only rabies-free state in the United States and to maintain this status, strict guidelines and specific programs must be completed before a dog or cat is accepted into the state of Hawaii.

Animals arriving in Hawaii without proper health prescription and documentation may be quarantined for up to 120 days in Honolulu at the owner's expense. Alaska Air is not responsible for any costs incurred when you arrive in Hawaii without the proper health documentation.

Space for pets traveling in the cabin or the cargo compartment of Alaska flights is completely subjected to availability. You can contact Alaska flight reservations and if your plans include travel on another airline, you can reach out to the partner airline directly to reserve space for pets, determine fees and obtain additional information.

Pet Restrictions on Flights to Hawaii

Alaska Air has limited the number of traveling dogs and cats on flights to Hawaii due to strong headwinds at various times of the year. The pets will be accepted as checked baggage on flights to or from Hawaii. This restriction does not apply to dogs and cats accepted to travel in the cabin.

February:

No dogs and/or cats are accepted as checked baggage on flights to/from Hawaii.

November 1 - January 31 and March 1 - April 30:

Only 1 dog and/or cat is accepted per Alaska flight as checked baggage on flights to/from Hawaii. Please contact the Alaska ticket reservations helpdesk for space availability on your desired flights.

April 1 - October 31:

Alaska Air’s standard pet allowance for dogs and cats applies. Contact Alaska reservations helpdesk for availability on your desired flights.

Arriving in Honolulu, Kona, Lihue, or Kahului

When you arrive in Honolulu, Kona, Lihue, or Kahului, the crew member at the aircraft door will escort you and your pet (dog or cat) to the inspection station. It is advised to have all documentation ready.
